Sarriá – Sant Gervasi

The whole area is replete with pockets of individual personality, with an abundance of quality gastronomy. This quiet corner of the City is only 3km or 10-15 minutes by taxi from Plaza Catalunya, or just 5 minutes from Parc Güell.

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is an affluent residential quarter with many parks and green areas, where the most prestigious of educational and medical centres are located. It is the main access point to the beautiful Parc Collserola, the City’s most important national park. The Sarrià of today is an exciting balance of the old and the new; there are the corners which have held on to the charm of the ancient town, particularly the streets surrounding the Major de Sarrià Street, and then there are the modern areas with their impressive communication links.

The Barcelona bourgeoise discovered Sant Gervasi in the mid-Nineteenth Century when the small town’s development began to take off. Property owners such as Dr. Andreu and Mandri or Ganduxer put their names to some of the new streets opening up. In little more than 50 years the area was transformed from a country village to a residential area of manor houses, holiday villas, convents and religious schools. Especially in the higher area of Bonanova, despite many of the grand houses having been replaced with luxurious apartment buildings, the historic charm of the period has endured today.

Some of the most important buildings in the area include the Torre de Bellesguard 16, the “Teresianas” Convent School on Ganduxer 85, both works of Gaudí. To name a few more there is; the Casa Castanyer in Pg Sant Gervasi 19, Casa Muley Afid, Pg Bonanova 55; and of course the old Casacuberta factory, the work of Josep Domènech i Estapà, This was restored and completed with an ultra modern building to become the Interactive Science Museum, the “Cosmocaixa”. Other notable urban elements include the Sant Gervasi Cementery, the Tamarita Gardens adjacent to the ABaC Restaurant & Hotel, or the Tranvía Blau taking you back in time on a journey from Plaza Kennedy to the Tibidabo Funicular.
